Matisse Goldfish

Students learned about the vibrant and colorful paintings of Matisse and created these in his signature style. We learned about Matisse's love for color and goldfish and created some brightly colored watercolor paintings. Next, we added some cutouts similar to those used in his artworks. During the final class, students created a small table and bowl that were filled with lightly brushed goldfish. The finished paintings really capture the style of the artist and the students learned a lot about Matisse!

Printed Flowers

Students in the 1-3 classes made these beautiful flower still lifes just in time for spring! We read When Pigasso Met Mootise so the students could learn about Henri Matisse and the different ways he painted vases of flowers. We began by doing a texture painting for the background- rubbing different texture plates with crayons then painting over it with a watercolor wash. Students then created some patterned vases and made flowers using different printing techniques. I demonstrated for the students how to make basic flowers and blue bonnets, however I left it open for experiments and a lot of the students surprised me with their creations!

Matisse Flowers

Students discovered the various artworks of Henri Matisse and completed these still-lifes in his style. We began by doing some crayon rubbings of various Matisse style cut-out pieces. We then created a vase and several pop-up flowers, a subject seen very often in the artwork of Matisse.
