Sea Turtles

Students in PreK and Kinder created these Eric Carle inspired sea turtles. We began by reading A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle and discussing the underwater illustrations. I then showed students how to draw a sea turtle step by step in pencil. Students then outlined the turtle with blue or green crayon and painted them using watercolor paints. After cutting them out, we added seaweed and lines in the background. We talked about what types of lines would imply movement in the water so students could create a moving seascape. 

Ladybugs

Students in PreK and Kinder created these collage ladybug artworks in the style of author/artist Eric Carle. We began by learning the different types of lines (straight, curvey, zigzag) and created the ground and grass in the artists choice. Next, students cut out circles to create the ladybugs. These were then completed by adding spots, heads, legs, and antennae using black paint. We read the story The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle to be inspired by the artworks as well!

Sea Turtles

These adorable sea turtles were created by our PreK and Kinder artists in the style of Eric Carle. Eric Carle is a children's book author and artist famous for his painted cut out images. First, we began by creating two paintings: one blue and one green. I explained to the students that the blue would be water and the green would be a turtle. Once the painting was complete, students took a comb and scraped lines into the paint. The blue should be curvy lines like the waves in the ocean, the green lines could be any kind of line that makes you think of a turtle. Next, we cut up the green paper to make turtles and added some black lines for eyes and a shell. For a final touch, students could use some extra painted paper to create some bubbles.
