Tiki Time!

These wonderful Tiki masks were designed by our 4-6th grade artists! We began by sketching perfectly symmetrical masks and giving them a strong black outline. These were then painted in brown because Tiki sculptures are usually made from wood. Students then painted on top or added cutout painted pieces. The students learned about the Maori tribes of New Zealand and their style of artwork. These masks were a fun way for our students to explore the art and culture of many Polynesian countries!

Tribute Murals

Middle school students completed these tribute murals as a group project before the end of the first semester. Each class was given a painting divided into sections- each student was responsible for one section. The two larger classes tackled the Stan Lee tribute paintings and the smaller class did a tribute to Spongebob Squarepants creator Stephen Hillenberg. This type of project is great for getting students to work together because every piece needs to line up and match the colors and lines.

The top image is a composite of several Stan Lee created characters from the Marvel Universe. They are:
Top Row: Captain America, Daredevil, Mr. Fantastic, Ant-Man
Second Row: Dr. Strange, Stan Lee quote, Spider-Man, Thor
Third Row: Falcon, Invisible Girl, Hulk, Sub-Mariner
Fourth Row: Dormammu, Iron Man, Nick Fury, Human Torch
Bottom Row: Black Widow, Thing, Silver Surfer, Conan

Watercolor Flowers

Students in grades 1-3 created these vibrant watercolor still-lifes. We began by drawing in pencil a vase of flowers. I showed the students how to draw realistically and how to place the still-life on the page to properly use the space. Students had the option to draw realistic flowers or make more stylized versions. These were then outlined with black paint before we painted. Students did a great job and these lovely paintings are really adding some much needed color to our hallways!
